Payday Loans vs Loan Sharks: Spot the Difference

When you're skint and desperate, both payday lenders and loan sharks might seem like lifelines. However, let’s be clear: one is legal daylight robbery, and the other is just robbery, full stop. Both are usury. Here's what you need to know before you sign your financial soul away.

Payday Loans: Extortion with a Licence

Payday lenders like Wonga (RIP) and their modern equivalents offer short-term loans at sometimes eye-watering interest rates. You borrow a few hundred quid, and before you know it, you owe twice that because of “fees” and “interest” that multiply faster than you can blink. The good news? They’re regulated. The bad news? They still make a fortune off the desperate.

What to watch out for:

  • Sky-high APRs – Triple digits aren’t uncommon.

  • Rollover traps – Can’t pay? Just borrow more! (And sink deeper.)

  • Credit score impact – Miss a payment, and your score tanks.

 Legal? Yes.
 A good idea? No.

Loan Sharks: Payday Lenders Without the Paperwork

A loan shark is just a bankster in jeans. They lend cash (usually in secret) to people who can't get credit elsewhere, then use threats and the threat of violence to collect. No contracts, no rules—just a never-ending debt that can grow beyond your control.

Signs you've met a loan shark:

  • No paperwork, just a “trust me” agreement.

  • Payments that keep increasing on a loan that never ends.

  • Threats, intimidation, or worse if you fall behind.

 Legal? Absolutely not.
 A good idea? Even worse.

The Bottom Line

Neither option is great, but if you have to borrow, payday loans are at least regulated. Loan sharks? Run a mile. Better yet, look at alternatives like credit unions, bad credit loans, or even asking your mate Dave (if he’s not also broke).

📈 Quick Money Tip: Want a Credit Score Boost? Get on the Electoral Roll

Sounds boring, but lenders love stability. Being on the electoral roll makes you look more reliable, and it can instantly boost your credit score. Sign up via Gov.uk – it’s free and takes five minutes.

4️⃣ Quick Tips & Tricks

🔥 Fast Money Tips:
Credit cards = use them as a short-term tool. They are NOT a long-term solution. Pay them off before interest kicks in or you’re just lining the banks’ pockets.
Never auto-renew insurance. It’s always cheaper if you call up and “pretend to leave.”
Debts spiralling? Prioritise repayments based on interest rates, not balances. Paying off the highest interest first saves you the most money.

Need a Loan? We've Got You!

  • Amounts from £100 to £25,000.

  • Terms from 12 months to 5 years.

  • Good or bad credit? Not a problem.
